A game in the world of Avatar

If Ubisoft made a mark with the announcement of the soon-announced-so-anticipated Star Wars: Outlaws, the box has another film adaptation under its head. You may have forgotten, but in a few days will be out Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, which, as its name suggests, takes over the universe imagined by James Cameron. It must be said that Ubisoft has not been as generous as Assassin's Creed Mirage in terms of communication. Apart from a post about the accessibility settings, another about the soundtrack and a video dedicated to the Season Pass, we can’t say that Ubisoft has given us information about the title in recent weeks. Especially since this latest information has gone quite unnoticed. In short, if you have forgotten its existence, we do not blame you too much, especially given how much this year 2023 was loaded level big releases. But there is so much that Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora remembers to your fond memories since it will be released in just a few days. The appointment is indeed set for December 7th on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.

With Frontiers of Pandora, the idea is to offer a new experience in the lush world of the Na’vi. The latter will not follow the plot of the films, although it shares some similarities with them. You are indeed a person alien to the culture and customs of the devotees of Eywa. Yet you are a Na’vi. “How is that possible” you will say to me? Well, quite simply because you were raised far from your own, with the GDR Military Corporation. Men have trained you to one day use you against your own people. Yeah, but then again, things didn't really go as planned. Eventually you run away and join the Na’vi camp. But we're going to have to learn all over again. Your clan, the Sarentu, is gone. You are the sole heir. As a result, it will be necessary to gain trust and learn the customs of other clans. Enough to offer an initiation dive into the heart of Pandora's magic.

The most beautiful game of the year?

During the year, we had several titles with a particularly inspired artistic direction (Alan Wake II, Lies of P, Hogwarts Legacy : l'Héritage de Houdlard...). But despite that, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is one step ahead. It must be said that when spectators discover the world of Pandora in 2009, they come face to face with landscapes that are more sumptuous than ever. Undeniably, one of the strengths of James Cameron’s Pandora is its beauty. “Surely the most striking and convincing creation of a fantasy world ever seen in the history of cinema” could be read in the columns of Time, that’s all! Between its lush nature, its dreamy blue tones and its breathtaking aerial landscapes, the world of Pandora makes you want to immerse yourself in it and lose yourself for hours. Visually, it is a constant invitation to explore. And that’s perfect for an open world video game, isn’t it? The hardware is already there to offer a particularly beautiful game. All the teams have to do is return to James Cameron’s unique aura . Easy, isn't it?

So inevitably, when we see the first panoramas of Frontiers of Pandora, the wow effect is immediate. And it’s even more obvious when you play it. And yes, we know what we’re talking about since we were able to get our hands on the title for a few hours. It was last October and our full preview. As you can imagine, the artistic direction is probably the point that marked us the most after this game session. It is really nice to discover the different biomes of Pandora controller in your hand. It’s colourful, it’s different, it’s flourishing... In short, it’s pretty beautiful. Some landscapes are even particularly successful and have really given us the effect of a visual slap like seldom before. But there's a but...

As we mentioned in our preview, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora seemed pretty uneven last October. Some passages in the air or at misty enemy bases proved frankly disappointing visually. Hazardous textures, cubic appearance... The landscapes of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora are not all popular. Even if it was an unfinished version of the game, which is also discovered via Parsec, it had left us with a strange mix in our mouth, between a taste for coming back and apprehension at the idea of discovering what can be hidden behind the beautiful varnish. If the game seemed capable of the best, it also seemed capable of the worst, or almost. So we are going to watch this very closely until the release on December 7th.
