Traditionally well-kept by Microsoft, the sales figures for the Xbox Series X|S consoles recently emerged during a presentation.

Specifically, these were displayed during a developer program organized by ID@Xbox in Brazil. We already knew that, but it's even more obvious with real numbers: Microsoft's Xbox Series is way behind Sony's PS5 on this generation of consoles.

A secret betrayed by a PowerPoint

For several years, Microsoft has been particularly secretive about the number of Xbox consoles sold, whether it's the One or the latest Series. That changed completely with nothing more and nothing less than a PowerPoint presentation that sold out a few days ago.

As a result, we learn that since their launch in November 2020, approximately 21 million Xbox Series have found buyers. In addition, 48% of Series S buyers have joined the Xbox ecosystem for the first time. Combining these figures with those of the Xbox One, sales of the last two generations of Microsoft consoles would represent 79 million units sold.

Figures that look pale in comparison to the competition

This revelation after about a decade of secrecy allows us to draw up a balance sheet against Microsoft's main competitors: PlayStation and Nintendo. Since we didn't know the numbers for the Xbox One, it's a good idea to compare the sales of the last two generations of consoles from their release to March this year, the last known "official" figures for the other manufacturers:

-        Xbox One: 58 million units sold since November 2013;

-        PS4: 117.2 million units sold between November 2013 and March 2023;

-        Xbox Series X|S: 21 million units sold since November 2020;

-        PS5: 38.4 million units sold between November 2020 and March 2023;

-        Nintendo Switch: 125.6 million units sold between March 2017 and March 2023.

On both generations, we can see that the Xbox consoles are seriously lagging behind their PlayStation counterparts. Despite an extremely chaotic launch, notably due to the coronavirus pandemic, the PS5 also draws its attention to the latest generation. Sony predicts that an additional 19 million units should be sold by March 2024.

And that's without counting on the Nintendo Switch, which continues to crush the competition and make the Japanese manufacturer happy after 6 years of good and loyal service. However, she may soon leave her throne. A new model, particularly capable of running the upcoming Call of Duty games, is slowly but surely beginning to be defined.
